Rotterdam has 18.5 km² of unused rooftops, which have the potential to address issues such as space shortages, climate change, the housing crisis and renewable energy. In 2022, Rotterdam Rooftop Days, in collaboration with MVRDV, LOLA Landscape Architects and Dutch Steigers, proposed the creation of a temporary 600 metre network of walkways connecting unused rooftops at a height of 30 metres. The installation aimed to raise public awareness about the potential of these spaces to contribute to a more sustainable, vibrant and liveable city. A standout feature was a bridge over the Coolsingel, one of Rotterdam's main streets. The orange Rooftop Walk included an exhibition showcasing artists, designers and architects demonstrating how rooftops can be used for vegetation, water storage, food production and energy generation. The walkway offered views of the city, hosted educational exhibitions, and provided access to the rooftops before returning visitors to street level.
