Eyes of Prague

Prague (Czech Republic), 2023

The 4 km riverfront project revitalizes 20  vaults as public spaces, combining modern design with historical architecture and unique access features.

The area along the Vltava River in Prague was originally used to redistribute materials transported by ships. However, the promenade’s vaults, which once connected the river to the city, were repurposed as warehouses and left abandoned for almost half a century. Following heavy flooding in 2002, a private company obtained the concession to transform this public space into a car park. But local residents had something else in mind, and in 2009, began organising exhibitions, artistic interventions and events, breathing new life into this space. This community transformation was a great success, and the new project was officially recognised in 2017. Now, after 15 years, the project is in its second phase, focusing on the renovation of six additional vaults along the riverside promenade. These architectural structures have been transformed into vibrant cultural and commercial spaces, including cafés and galleries, successfully reestablishing the city's strong connection to the river.
