Political scientist and historian

The political scientist and historian Ira Katznelson is Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University (New York). In 1966 he graduated with a BA degree from Columbia University, after which he obtained a PhD in History from Cambridge University in 1969, the year in which he also founded the peer-reviewed quarterly Politics & Society. His areas of specialisation are American and comparative politics. He was president of the American Political Science Association (APSA) from 2005 to 2006 and is now president of the Social Science Research Council, New York.

Among his published works are:

• Black Men, White Cities: Race, Politics, and Migration in the United States, 1900-30, and Britain, 1948-68, 1973.
• City Trenches: Urban Politics and the Patterning of Class in the United States, 1981.
• The Politics of Power: A Critical Introduction to American Government, 6th ed., 2006 (co-authored with Mark Kesselman and Alan Draper).
• Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time, 2013.
