Interview with Pascal Cornips, author of the Cuyperspassage, Special Mention in the 2018 Prize
Providing the missing link in the complete refurbishment of the Amsterdam central station, the Cuyperspassage is crucial as a way of easing increasing flows of pedestrians and cyclists moving between the old city and its northern districts.
The apparently simple tunnel was achieved by means of a highly complex engineering and architectural intervention which made its construction possible without interfering with the urban rail transit. Moreover, the designers of the Cuyperspassage have made a beautiful tunnel, “something more than just a link, but really a place, something nice to experience”.
