Centre for Building with Earth – Oracles Park

Dobrava pri Škocjanu (Slovenia), 2023

Founded in 2021, the Centre for Building with Earth is located on a historic farm in a culturally significant region of Slovenia, home to remains from the Roman era and the mediaeval town of Gutenwerth. The area faces challenges such as suburbanisation and loss of historical identity that threaten traditional building techniques and agricultural land use. The centre aims to preserve this heritage through sustainable practices, focusing on building with natural materials such as earth, wood and straw. The old farm buildings were renovated to accommodate cultural and educational activities such as workshops, festivals and symposia. There are currently two pavilions in the park called Oracles; the first, built in 2022, features a rammed earth wall, while the second, built in 2023, is modular. These structures demonstrate contemporary land-use possibilities and address issues of construction and climate change. Given the success of the project, there are plans to build more pavilions to improve sustainable architectural techniques and materials.
