AIRE (Pavilion of the TAC! Urban Architecture Festival 2022)

Granada (Spain), 2022

The pavilion uses rental scaffolding, natural jute fabric and local riprap to create a sustainable, ephemeral structure embodying circular economy principles and regional craftsmanship.

Spain’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, in collaboration with the Arquia Foundation, selected Granada to host the first edition of the TAC! Urban Architecture Festival and launched an international competition for architects under 45 years old to design a temporary pavilion in the Plaza del Humilladero. This square experiences heavy foot traffic, which led to its decline as a social space. The aim of the temporary pavilion was to address this challenge and offer a space for cultural activities between 14 October and 14 November 2022. The winning project, AIRE, was built with sustainable and local materials: rented scaffolding, fabrics made in Granada and stone from Sierra Elvira. The pavilion was designed to be adaptable and promote sustainability and circularity, using materials that were reused or returned to their place of origin following the event.
