Route of the Ribeira

Loures (Portugal), 2023

The 6.1 km wooden walkway features stilts, photovoltaic lighting and bridges, offering habitat observation, flood protection and recreational opportunities.

This estuary redevelopment project lies within a protected natural ecosystem, featuring mudflats, salt marshes and reed beds, which form part of the Natura 2000 network. This area is one of the most important wetlands in the country and in Europe, and plays a vital role for migratory waterfowl. The southern part of the estuary contained a landfill, overrun with invasive plants, whereas the northern section preserved native halophyte species and infrastructures providing access to the river. The project aimed to coordinate efforts among three municipalities – Vila Franca de Xira, Loures and Lisbon – to create a continuous route for pedestrians and cyclists along the riverbanks, promote sustainable mobility, connect urban areas and integrate other transport systems. The 6.1-kilometre walkway is elevated on pillars, and features bridges, observation points, shaded areas and information panels. Overall, the redevelopment has improved habitat observation, protected against flooding and preserved these precious wetlands.
