Near the centre of Ghent, Belgium, an abandoned metalworks factory was converted into a residential co-housing project and neighbourhood health centre. The site, which dates back to the Middle Ages, belonged to the Malmar metalworks factory until 1997. After its closure, the facilities fell into disrepair, attracting urban artists such as ROA, famous for his graffiti. The aim of the project, which began in 2007, was to renovate this disused industrial space while preserving its historic character. Part of the old factory was transformed into Bijgaardepark, a 2,000 m² park within the factory walls with recreational areas, restored graffiti and space for local wildlife, including a bat colony. The design also integrates a fern garden and spaces for socialising.
