The transformation in Bad Salzdetfurth, Germany, aimed to create a new focal point that would help define the town’s collective identity by turning a busy car thoroughfare into a vibrant marketplace for festivals and events. The initiative sought to honour the town’s history while opening it up to the Lamme River, addressing issues such as lack of accessibility and poor biodiversity. The landscape design focused on creating a backdrop that enhances rather than overshadows the historic town and natural environment. The redesigned market square is a large, unobstructed space with a uniform surface that accentuates the beauty of the timber-framed buildings. Benches along the perimeter provide seating and improve sight lines. To reflect the town’s history, the Salzdetfurth wooden bench, reminiscent of traditional architectural styles, was introduced. This project celebrates both nature and history, fostering a strong sense of local identity while encouraging community participation.
