Lawyer and women’s rights researcher

Sajia Begham is a lawyer and researcher into woman’s rights in Afghanistan. She has worked for the United Nations and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in the areas of gender politics and democratic participation of women in Afghanistan. She is director of the Family Response Units programme of the AWDSC (Afghan Women Skills Development Centre), a non-profit-making organisation which aims to raise awareness in Afghan society about women’s rights, and also manages two women’s refuges, in addition to being a board member of the Afghan Women's Islamic Network (AWIN). She has published studies on a range of legal matters, for example the functioning of the Afghan government’s gender units, forced marriages, suicide among women and girls, the role of the legal system in protecting women’s rights in Afghanistan, and other subjects.
