Architect and President of the Portuguese Chamber of Architects. Member of the Prize’s Board of Experts (2022)
Architect graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon, holding an Honorary Degree from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon and from the Faculty of Architecture of Alghero, Italy.
He established his own practice in 1975.
In 1991 founded his studio Gonçalo Byrne Arquitectos.
Between 1985 and 1987, he was director of Jornal Arquitectos (published by the Portuguese Architects Order).
Byrne has been teaching at several international universities.
He has also been a jury member in many design competitions and accolades (Mies van der Rohe Award 2017, the Vasco Vilalva Award, by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Swiss Architectural Award - BSI Architectural Foundation, Juana de Vega Award (La Coruña).
Byrne’s work has also been awarded (prize A.I.C.A. / S.E.C., Gold Medal by the French Academy of Architecture, Piranesi Prix de Rome 2014 for the National Museum Machado de Castro, Coimbra).
President of the National Directive Council of the Portuguese Architects Order (2020-2022 triennium).
