Architect. Member of the Prize’s Board of Experts (2014-2016)

An architect and director since 2012 of the Fondazione per l’Innovazione Urbana in Bologna, which was known as the Urban Center Bologna until 2017, he previously worked as consulting architect for the city councils of Brescia, Ferrara, Bologna, and others. He was coordinator of the Istituto di Ricerca Sociale in Milan from 2011 to 2012 and, prior to that, he worked in Rome at the Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica e Associazione Planum, a cultural entity with an online magazine Planum – European Journal of Planning Online. He has also worked with the Department of Architecture and Planning (DIAP) at the Polytechnic University of Milan.

He studied Architecture at the Università degli Studi in Florence and, since 2002, has had his own architecture studio, Ing. Gianni Giovannini. In his academic work, he has been an advisor for projects on the European, national, regional, and local scales as well as publishing several internationally recognised essays. These include “Dieci anni di Urban Center Bologna” (La Nuova Città, Nº 1, 2013), Dalla città: il momento urbanistico di Bologna e la sua dimensione pubblica (Franco Angeli, 2011), and Bologna, esperienze di confronto Pubblico orientate al progetto (Insegna del Giglio, Università di Firenze, 2010).
