 He is one of the most influential historians of the latter half of the twentieth century. Born in Alexandria, he grew up in Vienna and Berlin. In 1933 he had to emigrate to the United Kingdom because of his Jewish origins. He studied at King’s College Cambridge, where he came into contact with Marxist historiography. His chef-d’oeuvre, the quartet The Age of Extremes. A History of the World, 1914-1991 (Vintage Books, 1996), published in Spanish as Historia del siglo XX (Crítica, 1997); The Age of Capital: 1848-1875 (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1975), published in Spanish as La era del capital, 1848-1875 (Crítica,2001); The Age of Revolution: Europe, 1789-1848 (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1962), published in Spanish as La era de la revolución, 1789-1848 (Crítica, 2005); and The Age of Empire (Vintage Books, 1989), published in Spanish as La era del imperio, 1875 -1914 (Crítica, 2005), have become obligatory reading in universities around the world. He has recently published On the Edge of the New Century (Libri 2001), published in Spanish as Guerra y paz en el siglo XXI (Crítica, 2007).
