Journalist

A Mexican journalist, Turati covers human rights issues and the human cost of violence in Mexico. She is a co-founder and project coordinator of the journalistic research laboratory Quinto Elemento Lab, and she participated in the creation of the network Periodistas de A Pie, an organization aimed at raising the quality of journalism in Mexico through training and the exchange of research techniques, experiences, strategies and styles.

She has coordinated research projects and led collaborative projects focusing on the memory of victims of violence, such as “Journalists for Ayotzinapa”. She also co-founded and coordinated the research website adondevanlosdesaparecidos.org and started a network for journalists covering disappearances. She coordinates the “Journalism and Human Rights” workshops at the Casa Refugio Citlaltépetl in Mexico City and is the author of the book Fuego Cruzado: las víctimas atrapadas en la guerra del narco [Crossfire: The victims trapped in the drug war] (Mondadori, 2011) and editor of the collective work Entre las Cenizas: Historias de vida en tiempos de Muerte [Among the Ashes: Stories of life in the time of death] (Sur+, 2014).

Among other awards, Turati has received the Gabriel García Márquez Award for Excellence in Journalism (2014), the Maria Moors Cabot Prize (2019) from Columbia University for her journalistic work on Human Rights, and the John Reed medal (2020) for her journalistic career.
