Juulia Kauste

Sociologist and art historian. Member of Prize Jury (2012-2016). Member of the Prize’s Board of Experts (2022-2024)

Juulia Kauste is an independent expert advising architects and designers. With a background in sociology, urban studies, and history of architecture, she has a proven track record in organizational leadership, curating and teaching. She has curated several programs, public events, and exhibitions, and served as commissioner at international biennale events, including the Nordic and the Finnish Pavilions at the Biennale in Venice and the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

She has been director of the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (1997 – 2010) and the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki (2010 – 2018). She has taught and published on urban sociology, multiculturalism, sustainability, and contemporary architecture. She has been a jury member for well-known architecture prizes and served as a member of steering committee for several events, for example the Alvar Aalto Symposium in 2015. Member of the jury of the European Prize for Urban Public Space from 2012 to 2016.
